Expressions through art

Vinita follows up from last time, talking about drawing stories from conditioned keywords related to diabetes and aiming to keep up with trends

Every year, millions of us look forward to the 25th, for the week of celebrations and parties. Similarly, every artist looks forward to the month of October, for Inktober. Created by Jake Parker, Inktober is a challenge made to improve skills and develop positive drawing habits amongst people. Globally, thousands of artists take on the challenge every year. Some also all back due to how continuous one has to draw and post. Like many, I too was looking forward to this, in the hope to be regular and consistent. (Well… I failed)

For Inktober, you have an official prompt list created while some follow their own versions- fantasy-themed, Halloween themed, etc. In my agenda to bring awareness, practice my skills and increase my followers, I decided to take the challenge of drawing every day and make it into diabetes related one hoping many eyes would fall into my concept. Luckily the prompt list was uploaded earlier, so I could plan a little.

The first step was reading and understanding the official list. Then tweaking it or arranging the words into phrases for it to sit into the scenario. Some may not make any sense or meaning at a glance, so, being over-ambitious, I decided to pen 2 line poems with every prompt

Thus that meant - Poem, A write-up for people to understand, a concept sketch and then inking of the said concept every day, while just joining in as a full-time designer. Phew.

For all the prompts, I had concept sketches, then a pencil sketch, and then inking that, daily.

While the intention was indeed beautiful, I failed to keep up with the speed with work coming in and just inking every day and eventually dropping off the race. But, this experience did teach me 2 things. We can associate our sugars to everything, sweet or sour and I really needed to work on my management skills, something I still face trouble with. Though incomplete, my sketches and the associated write-ups are up on my Instagram. Feel free to ping me there, even though they belong to the previous decade.

The 'completed list'

Day 1 - Into the Ring.

Diagnosed, detected, found out, SHIT.

Into the ring of a youth in Crisis

The explanation is up on Instagram

Day 2 - Mindless

Mindless the Mind lost with no clues

I am so young, now what do I do

The explanation is up on Instagram

Day3 - Bait Food

All in my life I think is food

Without those crisps and fries, how do I do

Healthier Subs? They exist too?

Are they also lies. Lies often fed into

The explanation is up on Instagram

Day4 - Freeze point

Freeze, take the pills,

Swallow them in, just suck it in

It’s just a simple pill

Why do you have to make a scene about it?

The explanation is up on Instagram

Some that were left halfway

With onetwogether now built, I hope this year, I finish the list this year and help reach out to many more!

With hope, Happy New year!
